Founded in 1908, Houston Country Club has thrived as a generational family club that enjoys recognition for its excellence in its facilities, programming, services, membership, and staff. With a rich history spanning over a century, the Club remains steadfast in its original purpose and enduring values, evident in its consistent growth from its humble beginnings of several hundred members in 1908 to its current membership of 1,300 today, and a recent significant capital investment in the future.

The Club’s future projects will include a major golf course restoration led by Andrew Green, one of the most highly sought-after golf course architects in America today, and the restoration of the Bayou frontage along the golf course. Beverage Operations Manager

Job Description

The Beverage Operations Manager/Sommelier is responsible for curating and maintaining a beverage program that enhances the overal dining and social experience for HCC members and their guests. This includes overseeing the selection, procurement and inventory control of all wine, spiris, and beverages served throughout the Club, while ensuring staff are thoroughly trained in beverage standards, mixology and responsible alcohol service.

The B.O.M./S. will collaborate closely with the Clubhouse Manager, Assistant Clubhouse Manager, Director of Culinary Operations, Director of Catering and Assistant Managers to develop beverage programming across all outlets. They will also work with outside vendors and the Wine Committee of HCC to coordinate wine dinners and tasting events. This individual will play a key role in member engagement by leading educational tastings and presentations, developing beverage promotions, and providing expert recommendations for food and beverage pairings. 

In addition, the B.O.M./S is responsible for the effective marketing of beverage initiatives to the membership, working alongside the F&B and Communications teams. The position requires maintaining an organized schedule of beverage-related events and promotions, taking into account seasonal trends. member preferences, and broader Club activities. The successful candidate should possess strong financial acumen, with experience in cost management, inventory tracking, and revenue reporting, as well as the ability to develop weekly schedules for bar staff and accurately track payroll.

The B.O.M./S. oversees both banquet and dining beverage operations They are responsible for the supervision, coaching and development of approximately 30 Beverage Staff Including but not limited to:

  • Assistant Beverage Manager
  • Dining Bar Supervisor
  • Beverage Administrator
  • Lead Bartender
  • Banquet Bartenders and Bar Backs
  • Dining Bartenders and Bar Backs
  • Halfway House Attendant
  • Cocktail Server

Candidate Qualifications

  • An energetic, tech-savvy, detail-oriented, and self-motivated approach to managing all aspects of beverage service and operations.
  • Extensive experience and advanced knowledge of proper food and beverage service techniques, ensuring all beverage outlets consistently deliver the highest standards of hospitality.
  • The ability to create, implement, and maintain ongoing training programs for bartenders, sommeliers, and beverage service staff, supporting professional development and consistency in guest experience.
  • A genuine passion for wine, along with comprehensive knowledge of varietals, pairings, and wine service, to support the Club’s expansive wine program and educate both staff and Members.
  • Strong leadership capabilities, with a proven ability to motivate, direct, and build cooperation among a diverse beverage team.
  • An exemplary work ethic and commitment to the Club’s mission, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to build rapport and communicate effectively and respectfully with Members, fellow managers, and staff at all levels.
  • A creative and forward-thinking mindset, bringing new ideas to enhance beverage programming, member engagement, and operational efficiency.
  • A polished, professional presence, consistently representing the Club and the beverage department at the highest standard

Educational Requirements

  • At least 3-5 years of quality experience in Club Management and/or Luxury Hotel & Restaurant Management
  • A four-year degree or commensurate experience
  • Certified Sommelier and/or WSET level III or above is a plus
  • Familiarity with Jonas, Excel, Word, Power Point and Canva are all a plus
