Lakeside Park Club traces its roots to the 1890s, when tobacco magnate Major Lewis Ginter built Lakeside Park to draw people to Richmond’s northern suburbs, complete with clubhouses, boat houses, a bowling alley, a pavilion, a restaurant, and a zoo. The park opened to the public on March 15, 1896, and Richmonders rode the streetcar out to enjoy it. Ginter’s venture even gave the surrounding neighborhood its name.
Today, as one of Virginia’s oldest private clubs, founded in 1896, Lakeside Park Club celebrates 130 years as a member-owned gathering place. Golf remains at its heart on an original Donald Ross–designed course, alongside a lakeside pool and snack bar, tennis, pickleball, and a full calendar of social events and tournaments.
What sets Lakeside apart is its spirit. This is a club built on friendship rather than formality: a relaxed, welcoming place where families and neighbors gather, generations of members know each other by name, and everyone is encouraged to come as they are. After 130 years, Lakeside Park Club remains what it has always been, a true community club at the center of Richmond life. The club has grown significantly over the past two years and continues to forge a larger, full club experience.
