The Lodge at Glendorn is a Relais & Chateau, 4-star Forbes resort on 1500 acres next to the Allegheny National Forest.  It features 12 guest cabins, and 4 suites in the main clubhouse. The Lodge features hiking, jeep tours, the Forest Spa, guided fly fishing, trap, skeet and sporting clays and bird hunting.  It has several recognitions including the Orvis Lodge of the Year for 2016 and Travel & Leisure's World's Best #1 Resort in the Continental US. 

Club is open 6 days per week, 11 months per year.

Job Summary (Essential Functions)

To provide and lead guests on recreational activities and excursions offered by The Lodge at Glendorn. Create a memorable and rewarding guest experience through guiding of fly-fishing, trap/skeet shooting, biking, hiking, water boating and other activities.  Clean and maintain Lodge equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Treat guests respectfully and engage them in conversation to maximize the guest experience.
  • Perform safety and instruction of each guided activity to participants.
  • Lead guests on hikes, archery, mountain biking, trap/skeet shooting, bird shoots, river and lake fly-fishing expeditions.
  • Operate and give instruction in kayaking, flat-water canoeing and paddle boards.  Maintain the equipment.
  • Lead jeep tours on single-track, jeep trails, log roads, and dirt roads as well as providing historical and cultural information on The Lodge at Glendorn.
  • Rig vessels, pack appropriate tackle, gear and required safety equipment. Communicate with other departments on excursion meals needed.
  • Teach guests casting skills, line management skills, and proper fish handling techniques.
  • Returning/Washing boots and waders after each trip. Maintain condition of fly rods and reels and prepare for guest use.
  • Provide recommendations to guests on flies and other equipment available in Orvis/Glendorn retail store.
  • Operate company vehicles properly, maintain cleanliness of vehicles.  
  • Instruct and operate shotguns, .22 Long Rifles, and long bows for archery with guests.
  • Guide hikes, with an emphasis on naturalism on Resort property and nearby National Forests, and Lodge of Glendorn Land.
  • Perform physical and administrative duties for the preparation and end of each activity expedition. Communicate to backoffice of any and all guest charges to be posted.
  • Keep attention to guests in relation to health-related matters such as physical exertion, sunstroke, and reminding guests to hydrate and to apply sunscreen.
  • Work with a variety of personalities and ages to make guests feel safe and comfortable, while delivering information in an understandable manner with respect to individual learning preferences.
  • Maintain conditions of trails, roads, streams and upland fields. Exercise land management processes.
  • Remain calm under pressure; handle crisis management as it unfolds and remain flexible to change as events happen.
  • Be organized and detail oriented, utilizing checklists or other systems to ensure no task is left undone; anticipate events and plan; prepare for the unexpected; remain focused on the result.
  • Be helpful, respectful, approachable and team oriented, building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
  • Possess strong customer service focus striving for high guest satisfaction and going out of the way to be helpful and pleasant.
  • Assist in managing the inventory and maintenance of Activities Department equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with on-site set up and clean up for activities.
  • Maintain Fish Hatchery.  Stock ponds, brooks and waterways accordingly.
  • Work closely with Activities management, co-workers and other departments on providing effective communication, planning, and organization to ensure all activity needs are met.
  • Promote resort activities to guests.
  • Assist front desk in accommodating guest needs such as luggage assistance, airport shuttles as schedule allows.
  • Maintain up-to-date awareness of Resort information, schedules and amenities.
  • Interact with children, parents, co-workers, guests, co-workers, and management in a professional and caring manner.
  • Answer phones/radios in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Converse with the guests at a high level, being aware of their needs and fulfill special guest requests as instructed by management or the guest directly.
  • Ensure confidentiality of guests before and throughout their stay.
  • Administer basic First Aid and CPR when needed and during emergency situations.
  • Assist in other activity assignments and duties as assigned by Lodge management.

Candidate Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma, GED or vocational training or job-related course work; Education in Outdoor Recreation preferred, not required.
  • Creditable experience in teaching and/or outdoor guiding including, but not limited to Fly fishing, hunting, hiking, shooting and other activities offered by Glendorn.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in customer service.
  • Valid CPR/AED/First Aid Certification.
  • Valid State Driver’s License with two years of driving experience.
  • Boaters Education Certificate.
  • Current and Valid Pennsylvania Fishing License.
  • Experience with basic grounds maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • Knowledge of botany, trees and plants.
  • Has a friendly and professional manner under periods of high demands and with guest, team members, and management.
  • Has a broad range of knowledge and work experience in different outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, winter sports, canoeing, kayaking and boating and clay shooting.
  • Able to absorb and embody Relais & Chateaux as well as Forbes philosophies. Has an Intuitive sense of Hospitality and servitude mentality.
  • Proficient ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment while remaining organized and prioritizing workload throughout the day.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform required role in emergency situations.
