The New York Athletic Club, founded in 1868, is an elite platinum and emerald-rated private club. The NYAC has over 9,000 active members and remains steadfastly committed to its roots: supporting athletes at the highest levels of Olympic competition while providing world class facilities at the Club’s two locations. The City House in Manhattan and Travers Island in Westchester County offer facilities for members who wish simply to remain fit and healthy.

Travers Island is located in Pelham Manor and sits on 33 beautiful acres surrounded by the Long Island Sound. Its focal points are the Olympic-sized saltwater swimming pool, children’s pool, cabanas, Tiki Bar, 18 tennis courts, 5 paddle courts, the rowing facility, a newly constructed 13,000 square foot fitness facility, and the yacht club consisting of floating docks and a full-service marina. In addition, the NYAC offers a 60,000+ square foot clubhouse with a grand ballroom accommodating up to 250 guests, outdoor patio with seating for 200, multiple banquet and meeting rooms, two dining rooms, three bars, pool & tennis snack bars and multiple administrative offices.

Club is open 5 days per week, 12 months per year.

Brief Job Description

The New York Athletic Club – Travers Island is seeking motivated and enthusiastic leaders to take part in our Internship program. Interns will have a primary area of focus but will have the opportunity to be involved in a rotational component to gain experience and exposure to other club departments.

Internships that are available:

Food and Beverage Rotational (2 Positions Available): The Food and Beverage Rotational Intern is responsible for providing the Club members with exceptional service. She/he will have the opportunity to work in all F&B areas, including the Patio Restaurant (Casual), Shore 31 Restaurant (Formal), Banquets, Snack Bars and Bars. This internship will sharpen Hospitality skills and provide hands-on experience that will not be learned in a classroom. The intern will report directly to the Clubhouse Manager and the Restaurant Supervisors.

This is a great entry level internship opportunity.

Beverage Rotational: The Beverage Rotational Intern will work closely with the Head Bartender and Food & Beverage Manager to learn how to provide excellent service, pertaining to the many varieties of bars that we use. She/he will concentrate on the ins and outs of bartending, ranging from causal to fine dining. This intern will experience many areas of the island and will have the opportunity to learn about the management of beverage. This person will report directly to the Clubhouse Manager.

This is preferably a Sophomore or a Junior who has previously held an internship.

Club Management Intern: The Rotational General Management Intern will work closely with the Travers Island Manager and will closely collaborate with the Senior Management team of Travers Island. She/he will spend time working in multiple departments while gaining experience and exposure to the many facets of club operations. The intern will concentrate on the operating results and will be trained on how to do so with various club components. The Intern will have the opportunity to learn more about the Club operation from a holistic viewpoint, firsthand. This person will report directly to the Travers Island Manager. 

This is preferably for a Junior, Senior or Graduate who has previously held supervisory internship role.

Events Management Intern: The Events Management Intern is responsible for ensuring that all event specifications are properly executed, alongside the management team. The Events intern will work in conjunction with the Clubhouse Manager in planning and executing Private Member Functions and Club Events. She/he will have the opportunity to experience multiple F&B areas and various types of events. The intern will be trained on event service, event administration and will have the opportunity to move into an event supervisory role. He/She will work with the Food and Beverage staff on providing excellent member and guest service by focusing on the little details as well as the big ones. The intern will report directly to the Clubhouse Manager.

This is preferably someone who has previously held a supervisory internship or has F&B experience.

Beverage Management Intern: The Beverage Management Intern will work closely with the Food & Beverage Manager and the Banquet Manager to ensure excellence in service, pertaining to the many varieties of bars that we use. She/he will concentrate on the operating results of the beverage program with an emphasis on efficiency, organization, cleanliness, and ambiance. This intern be responsible for administrative aspects of beverage, such as inventory and ordering. He/she will be an integral part of the Food & Beverage Operation. This person will report directly to the Clubhouse Manager.

This is preferably a Junior, Senior or Graduate who has previously held an internship and has bartending experience.

Restaurant Supervisory Intern (2 Positions Available): The Restaurant Supervisory Intern is responsible for supervising the ala carte patio restaurant which is the Club’s most active summer dining outlet. She/he will co-manage the operation and concentrate on the operating results in this fast-paced area, with emphasis on the quality of service offered to members of the club. This person will report directly to the Clubhouse Manager. 

This is preferably a Junior, Senior or Graduate, who has previously held an internship or has F&B experience.

Culinary Intern: The Culinary Intern is responsible for taking ownership of all tasks given to learn and complete. She/he will rotate through various line positions and will be challenged to be creative within culinary operations at many points along the way. He/She will be given the opportunity to sharpen many skills pertaining to the menus of fast-paced casual, banquets, fine-dining, casual dining and other facets of being a culinarian. This person will gain confidence and an impressive resume, having a diverse range of experience by the end of the summer. This person will report directly to the Executive Chef.

This is preferably a Junior or Senior, who has previously held an internship or has Culinary experience.

Snack Bar Management Intern: The Snack Bar Management Intern is responsible for co-managing the entire Operation of one of three outlets. She/he will manage the operation and operating results of the Snack Bar with emphasis on the quality of service offered to members of the club. This person will report directly to the Snack Bar Manager. He/she will closely collaborate with the Clubhouse Manager and Food and Beverage Team. This is a great position, as the intern will learn how to manage their own fast-paced, casual restaurant with the help of a wonderful team.  

This is preferably a Junior, Senior or Graduate, who has previously held an internship or has F&B experience.

Cabana Management Intern: The Cabana Management Intern is responsible for supervising and running the Cabana/Lawn area. She/he will manage the operation and concentrate on the operating results of all cabana facilities and the lawn area with emphasis on the quality of service offered to members of the club. The person will report directly to the Cabana Manager.

This is preferably a Junior or Senior who has previously held an internship.

Youth Programming Management Intern: The Youth Programming Management Intern is responsible for supervising and running the activities for children of members. She/he will be taught to manage the operation and operating results of the children’s activities offered at the club, with emphasis on the program’s quality of service. Youth Management covers Day Camp and Junior Sailing, as well as daily activities. The ability to have fun with the children and be creative with the activities offered, is a requirement for the person in this position. This Intern will report directly to the Travers Island Manager.

This is preferably a Sophomore, Junior or Senior who has previous work experience.

Membership and Accounting Administrative Intern: The Membership Services Intern is responsible for assisting the Accounting/Membership Office Manager with handling member needs and completing administrative tasks for the accounting office. This person will directly report to the Accounting/Membership Office Manager.

This is a great entry level internship opportunity.

Candidate Qualifications

The successful candidates will be enthusiastic and highly motivated Hospitality students. Candidates must show excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. The New York Athletic Club expects candidates to maintain a strong work ethic, a positive attitude towards work, and the desire to constantly improve themselves and others. Qualified candidates must be team players who are motivated to exceed member and guest expectations with every interaction by paying close attention to detail. The ideal intern will have the ability to commit to the position for the full summer, starting before Memorial Day and ending on or after Labor Day.

All employees must maintain a neat, clean, and well-groomed appearance per Club standards. Upon employment, all employees are required to fully comply with the New York Athletic Club rules and regulations.  Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules, including weekends and holidays, to reflect the business needs of the Club. Educational Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a four-year Hospitality program.
  • CMAA Member is preferred.
