New Zealand

Unique Club/Facility Details

“The concept of Tara Iti began out of my love of golf and the desire to create a special oasis in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. New Zealand is a country to which I have been bringing my family and friends for over 20 years. My vision started with a challenge that would take the form of building an uncompromising golf course on land with a complicated history, but with unparalleled beauty.” – Ric Kayne

Tara Iti is a private golf club located on the North Island of New Zealand on the Te Arai coast, north of Pakiri and south of Mangawhai. Tara Iti was formed through a partnership of owners from New Zealand and the United States of America, with a clear vision for this spectacular piece of land.

Te Arai, the beach beyond which Tara Iti Golf Club sits, is significant as “the lifting off point between earth & heaven” to the local Maori. The Maori name aptly describes the feeling you get when you are at Tara Iti looking out at the land and sea, experiencing the challenges of the golf layout and architecture, relishing the unparalleled service and enjoying the camaraderie of the membership. It will be a place that demands attention and one where members will continually be excited to return and proud to bring their guests.

Ric & Suzanne Kayne’s decision to create a world class, Tom Doak designed golf course and club was driven by their 20-year love affair with New Zealand. It began with golf, was reinforced by cruising the coasts of New Zealand with their family and friends, and culminated in a desire to invest and establish a world-class club, and spend more of their lives in New Zealand with friends, family and interesting people from all over the world.

Tara Iti will be a club of unique stature and structure in the whole expanse of Australasia.

Club is open 7 days per week, 12 months per year.

Age of Club: 10
Club Ownership: Member-Owned
This club uses CMAA's General Manager/Chief Operating Officer Concept.

Golf Facilities

  • 18 hole course, par 71, designed by Tom Doak
Golf will be the focal attraction and amenity for members and guests of Tara Iti, and the golf experience will be uncompromising. The unique and traditional links course design and the stark contrast of the Pacific Ocean, white sand dunes, and the immaculately maintained golf course will set the standard from which the other services and facilities will follow. Tom Doak’s minimalistic and environmentally sensitive approach is in keeping with the natural environment and surrounds, and will flow through into other aspects of the operation.

The Tara Iti Clubhouse was designed by Pip Cheshire of Cheshire Architects, a nationally recognised and awarded architect based in Auckland. The task was to identify, refine and exploit the qualities that already exist in the landscape, and shape personal buildings that belong in this special place. The Tara Iti Clubhouse takes advantage of the folds, dips and dives of the wide-open landscape. The single story form is broken into two major elements linked by a robust concrete wall; the bar, pro shop and dining room with its supporting spaces to the east and the locker rooms to the west. These two elements are pulled apart to form a welcoming courtyard as one approaches and a terrace bathed in afternoon light overlooking the eighteenth fairway and the offshore islands to the north. The well proportioned scale and impact of the clubhouse on the links is reduced by paired gabled roofs enclosing the forms, clad in weathered timber, they echo the local vernacular of rural hay sheds and offer a promise of warmth within.
