Athletics Intern

Job Description

The New York Athletic Club is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Athletics Intern to join our Travers Island Athletics team. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain comprehensive experience in managing racquet sports operations, retail inventory and sales, and supervising facility activities. This position is ideal for students or recent graduates looking to build a career in sports facility management, event coordination, or private club leadership.

Duration: 3-5 months with the possibility of extension based on performance

Key Responsibilities:

Facility Management:

  • Oversee the daily operations and active maintenance of the tennis courts and racquet sports facilities, following proper procedures.
  • Ensure all areas are prepared for play, including court maintenance, equipment setup, and safety measures are in place.
  • Coordinate with maintenance staff to address any facility issues promptly.

Customer Service and Supervision:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for Club Members at the Tennis House and/or Paddle House, addressing inquiries, managing reservations, and resolving any concerns.
  • Provide exceptional service to enhance Member experience and satisfaction.
  • Supervise and lead a team of Racquets Attendants, fostering a positive, productive work environment.
  • Present and maintain all Club standards and policies to Club satisfaction.

Event and Program Support:

  • Assist in the planning and execution of Racquets social events, tournaments, and special programs.
  • Coordinate event logistics, including participant registration, scheduling, and equipment management.
  • Monitor event execution and breakdown to ensure compliance with Club standards and Member expectations.

Administrative Duties:

  • Perform administrative tasks such as inventory management, data entry, and report generation for Racquets and Retail departments.
  • Assist in overall day-to-day Travers Island Athletics retail operations and sales.
  • Track the usage of courts and equipment to assist in operational planning and budgeting.

Team Leadership and Training:

  • Train new Racquets attendants on Club protocols, customer service skills, and operational procedures.
  • Evaluate the performance of attendants, providing constructive feedback and coaching as needed.

Compensation:

  • This is a paid internship. Candidate Qualifications

  • Strong leadership qualities and previous experience in a supervisory role or team management preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with members and staff.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and capable of learning new software systems.
  • A passion for sports, particularly racquet sports, and a commitment to providing high-quality recreational experiences.

Work Conditions:

  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, early mornings, and evenings as required by Club activities and events.
  • This is a physically active position requiring the intern to stand, walk, lift, and manage sports equipment.

Educational Requirements

  • Pursuing or holding a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Business Administration, Hospitality, or related field.
