Unique Club/Facility Details

Wanakah Country Club was founded in 1899, and is the second oldest country club in Western New York. The club is located just twelve miles south of downtown Buffalo, along the shores of Lake Erie. The club is open ten and a half months of the year and is very active May - September. The club has a beautiful Willie Watson designed 18-hole golf course that finished a multi-million-dollar renovation in 2018. In 2020 the Club renovated and expanded its member Grill Room, and outside dining spaces, while also installing a simulator, and renovating the main entryway. The Club recently started a locker room and member entryway renovation and expansion that will be complete in April of 2023. The Club is updating its Strategic Plan to continue to focus on future investment and governance to ensure it remains amongst the finest private clubs in Western New York. Planning has begun for the Club’s 125th Anniversary in 2024. The Club has a very active and engaged membership that supports the Club throughout the year. There are several club events that “sellout” throughout the year. The Club has a very active junior sports program late June through mid-August. The Club is the members home away from home that fosters a great sense of community.

Golf Facilities

18 hole course, par 72, designed by Willie Watson

The picturesque 18 hole golf course tips out over 7,000 yards, and has beautiful views of Lake Erie throughout. The Club averages 16,000 rounds annually and limits its golfing membership to 300 families. During the course renovation completed in 2018, new tees, bunkers, and drainage were installed throughout. The Club hosts several golf tournaments, including USGA national qualifiers, the New York State Mid-Amateur, plus several member tournaments, and outside charity outings. In 2024 the Club will be hosting the New York State Amateur.

The Club hosts a bocce league which is played throughout the summer, and also has begun a pickleball league. In the winter months the Club offers sledding, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing. There is a simulator located next to the grille room, which is very active during the off season.

The Clubs member dining program is very active May-September with members dining both inside and outside in our new grill room and member terrace that overlook the Lake. The menu changes every two months, with weekly specials. There is a robust whisky collection and extensive wine list featuring wines from France, Italy, and the United States. The Club hosts several private functions throughout the year including weddings, showers, business meetings, etc. that all must be hosted or sponsored by a member. The Club hosts a variety of member events, including upscale wine dinners, chef’s tables, stations parties, and many other events hosting different entertainment for the entire family. The Clubhouse is open six days a week brunch – dinner May-September, and then is open for brunch on the weekends, and dinner Wednesday-Sunday October through January, and the end of March-April. The Club completely shuts down in February and most of March depending on the weather.

Job Description

The Clubhouse Manager is responsible for all food & beverage service, beverage program, and locker room operations. This individual will report directly to the General Manager / COO and work closely alongside the Executive Chef, Events Director, Head Golf Professional, Grounds Superintendent, Aquatics Director, Tennis Professional, and Controller. This individual is responsible to develop, train, and hold accountable a team of passionate, dedicated individuals to provide outstanding service to our membership and guests. Other responsibilities include assisting with the planning, implementation and monitoring of budgets. Planning, and administering special events and banquets to deliver memorable experiences is a must. Overseeing a diverse beverage program to match our cuisine, with knowledge in beer, spirits, and wine. Attention to detail inspecting all clubhouse facilities for upkeep and cleanliness and ensuring that the wants and needs of club members and guests are consistently exceeded are the main focuses for this position.

Candidate Qualifications

The ideal candidate must articulate a professional and polished demeanor at all times, be a self-starter and have outstanding communication skills. This proven leader must be trustworthy, dedicated, creative, and service oriented with an eye on detail. General computer skills including social media knowledge is necessary. Progressive managerial or supervisory growth in private clubs, resorts, hotels, or fine dining establishments preferred.

Educational Requirements

Bachelors Degree in Hospitality or Business preferred. Active CMAA enrollment and education preferred.
