Golf Facilities

  • 18 hole course, par 72, designed by Walter Travis
The golf course is widely recognized as a Walter Travis design. Walter J. Travis, a pioneer in golf course architecture, and a legend in golf in the early decades of the 20th century, certainly laid claim to the design as his own. Herbert Barker and Columbia Founding Member Dr. Walter S. Harban, both close associates of Travis, are often noted as the official designers. The Club has hosted three national golf championships - the 1921 United States Open, the 2003 United States Junior Amateur Championship and the 2021 United States Girls' Junior Championship.

Tennis has a long and venerable history at Columbia; as a member of the Centenary Tennis Club, all Columbia members automatically become members of the Association of Centenary Tennis Clubs, an Association comprised of 66 tennis clubs all with roots going back more than 100 years. Columbia is also a Founding Club Member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame Club Affiliate Program. The Club has hosted numerous notable events in tennis including the Mid Atlantic & US National Boys Clay Championships.

Brief Job Description

Food and Beverage Rotational Intern:

This internship is ideal for an individual looking to build their foundational food and beverage skills in the club industry. This intern will gain experience in our Columbia Room, Terrace Room, Banquets and Club Events in various roles such as Server Assistant, Ala Carte Server, Banquet Server, and Cocktail Server.

This internship will allow this intern to participate in a supervisory internship in the future.

Dining Room Supervisory Intern:

This intern will gain experience leading our team of service professionals in our Columbia Room, Terrace Room and Grill Room. While supervising the three dining rooms with an average of 150-300 covers nightly, this intern will be responsible for leading the team to their greatest potential, conduct pre-shift meetings, and exceed member expectations of service and quality.

This internship is ideal for someone who has previously completed a club internship or has Food and Beverage experience.

Beverage Rotational Intern:

The Beverage Rotational Intern will concentrate on the nuance of bartending, ranging from causal to fine dining and events. This intern will experience many areas of the club and will have exposure to managing a beverage operation.

This internship will allow this intern to participate in a supervisory internship in the future.

Banquet Supervisory Intern:

This intern will gain experience leading our team of service professionals executing our banquet and club events. With 2,363 annual events ranging from 5-2,100 attendees, this intern will be responsible for leading the team to their greatest potential, conduct pre-shift meetings, and exceed member expectations of service and quality.

This internship is ideal for someone who has previously completed a club internship or has Food and Beverage experience.

The Market Supervisory Intern:

This intern is responsible for managing the Market – our Pool Side quick service food operation. She/he will manage the operation with emphasis on the quality of service offered to members of the club. This intern will learn how to manage their own fast-paced, casual restaurant.

This internship is ideal for someone who has previously completed a club internship or has Food and Beverage experience.

Youth Programming Management Intern:

This Intern is responsible for supervising and running the activities for our younger members. She/he will be taught to manage the children’s activities offered at the club, with emphasis on the program’s quality of service. Youth Management covers Camp Columbia, Kid City, and Jr. Night Outs. The ability to have fun with the children and be creative with the activities offered, is a requirement for the person in this position.

Candidate Qualifications

·         Candidates must be available for a three month internship beginning in mid-late May and concluding in mid-August. (exact dates are negotiable)

·         Candidates should be actively pursuing a degree in hospitality management.

·         CMAA involvement is preferred, not required.
