Founded in 1917, Rolling Rock Club is located in the historic Laurel Highlands of Southwestern Pennsylvania, approximately 50 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. Organized as a sporting club, conservatory and wildlife sanctuary, the surrounding landscape is truly one of the most beautiful and serene parcels in the Eastern United States. Club Natural springs and running streams meander through the entire property. The Club has a trout hatchery producing four species that ultimately stock our crystal clear 6 mile stream. Fishing, upland bird hunting, claybird shooting, hiking, tennis, golf and swimming are a few activities members and their families enjoy while visiting the Club. The Club employs a full-time staff of professional hunting and fishing guides and maintains a kennel with 30 well-trained hunting dogs. No other private Club in North America provides the breadth of sporting facilities found at Rolling Rock. Equally impressive is the spacious, traditionally appointed Clubhouse featuring comfortable formal dining rooms, lounges and terraces. Fashioned like a grand English country manor, the 80,000 square foot clubhouse has 29 guest rooms and four guest cottages. Fresh floral arrangements are abundant, fashioned by in-house florists adding to the Club’s overall warmth. The Club’s overall ambiance, personalized services and commitment to excellence are in keeping with the finest destination properties around the world.

Rolling Rock Club boasts a storied golf tradition, featuring a remarkable front nine designed in 1922 by the legendary Donald Ross, renowned for his distinctively undulating greens and masterful bunker placement. Widely celebrated as one of the finest nine-hole layouts in golf, it offers a challenging yet picturesque experience amid the rolling hills of Pennsylvania. The back nine, expertly crafted by Brian Silva in 1997, complements Ross's original vision, creating a seamless 18-hole masterpiece. With approximately 9,500 rounds played annually, the Club enjoys an active local Membership that participates in a vibrant yet relaxed calendar of events. Rolling Rock Club offers an exceptional blend of history, design excellence, and community for golf enthusiasts.

The Racquets Department at Rolling Rock Club features four outdoor Har-Tru tennis courts, providing a premier playing surface for enthusiasts during the season from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The pool facilities at Rolling Rock Club provide an exceptional experience for Members of all ages. Completed in the summer of 2020, the area features a full-size Olympic lap pool with varying depths, a diving board, and a slide for an active and engaging swim experience. For younger swimmers, a mid-sized pool offers a safe and enjoyable environment, while the zero-entry baby pool is perfect for toddlers. These thoughtfully designed amenities ensure a welcoming and family-friendly space where Members can relax, play, and enjoy the summer season in style.

Rolling Rock Club is a true sportsman’s haven, offering unparalleled facilities and experiences for outdoor enthusiasts and fitness aficionados alike. Clay Bird Shooting Lodge: Equipped with 25 sporting clay bird machines, 4 trap fields, 2 skeet fields, 2 sub trap fields, and 1 Olympic trap field. The historic 100+ year-old shooting lodge, adorned with over 50 trophy mounts from the Mellon family collection, provides a unique and inspiring setting for Members. Annually, over 412,500 shotgun shells are used in the clay bird department. Hunting Grounds and Game: Spanning 750 acres of well-maintained hunting fields, the Club offers two distinctive shooting styles: European-style driven shoots and walk-up field hunting. Richly stocked game includes 25,000 pheasants, 20,000 ducks, 10,000 chukar, and 5,000 Hungarian partridges annually. The Game Department uses 247,500 shotgun shells annually to create exceptional hunting experiences. Dog Kennels: Specializing in raising and training 40 upland bird hunting dogs, particularly English Cocker Spaniels and English Springer Spaniels, the kennels uphold a legacy of excellence in sporting dogs. Fishing: Enjoy 6.5 miles of private stocked streams, annually replenished with 14,000-18,000 trout, providing unmatched angling opportunities. The Orvis-endorsed fly shop and expert guides with 30+ years of experience ensure a premium fly-fishing adventure. Fitness: A modern fitness program with a private fitness instructor offering personal training, yoga, and circuit training to support Members’ well-being and athletic goals.

Job Description

SUMMARY

The Sports & Recreation Internship at Rolling Rock Club is a dynamic, rotational opportunity designed for students passionate about gaining hands-on experience across the Club’s diverse sports and recreation departments. This individual will support and learn the operations of various departments, including Game, Clay Bird Shooting, Fitness Center, Golf Operations, Fish Hatchery, Tennis, and the Aquatics Department.

Key responsibilities include assisting with daily operations, engaging with Members and guests to ensure enjoyable experiences and participating in special projects or events. This role requires a commitment to upholding the Club’s traditions, providing exceptional service, and collaborating with department leaders to learn and contribute effectively. The student will report weekly with the Director of Sports and recreation to enhance their learning experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Work closely with managers in each department to gain a comprehensive understanding of operations.
  2. Participation in scheduling, coaching on Member services, and event promotion (e.g., tournaments, matches, shoots, contests).
  3. Assisting with program development to enhance Member experiences.
  4. Have an approachable demeanor with other team members and Members.
  5. Actively engage with Members and guests to enhance their experiences.
  6. Collaborate with staff to understand department-specific operations.
  7. Participate in weekly activity reports and evaluations to track progress and insights.
  8. Respects the Club’s customs and traditions and works to preserve Rolling Rock Club as a “quiet country English Manor.”
  9. Other related assignments as necessary.
  10. Maintains regular, consistent and reliable attendance.

Candidate Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  1. Must be pursuing or have achieved a degree in sports and recreation or a related field from an accredited University.
  2. Must have a strong desire to promote all sporting endeavors the club offers.
  3. Following guidance and direction from senior management effectively, efficiently, and appropriately.

 

SKILLS

  1. Fundamental time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work, both with a team and independently.
  2. Exhibits good communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  3. Ability to problem solve and react quickly to any issues which arise during a shift.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  1. Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  2. Ability to stand for long periods of time (8-10 hours consistently).
  3. Requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions, with exposure to temperatures ranging from extreme heat to cold, rain, and snow.
  4. Availability and understanding that the position often requires hours in excess of a standard workweek (40-50 hours).
  5. Requires walking and navigating through uneven terrain, dense brush, and varying elevations during hunting excursions.
  6. Requires frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing.
  7. Dexterity to handle hunting equipment, firearms, and other tools safely and effectively.
